United State Military
The Threatening Storm by Kenneth M. Pollack, In The Threatening Storm, Kenneth M. Pollack, one of the world's leading experts on Iraq, provides a masterly insider's perspective on the crucial issues facing the United States as it moves toward a new confrontation with Saddam Hussein. For the past fifteen years, as an analyst on Iraq for the Central Intelligence Agency and the National Security Council, Kenneth Pollack has studied Saddam as closely as anyone else in the United States. In 1990, he was one of only three CIA analysts to predict the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. As the principal author of the CIA's history of Iraqi military strategy and operations during the Gulf War, Pollack gained rare insight into the methods and workings of what he believes to be the most brutal regime since Stalinist Russia. Examining all sides of the debate and bringing a keen eye to the military and geopolitical forces at work, Pollack ultimately comes to this controversial conclusion: through our own mistakes, the perfidy of others, and Saddam's cunning, the United States is left with few good policy options regarding Iraq. Increasingly, the option that makes the most sense is for the United States to launch a full-scale invasion, eradicate Saddam's weapons of mass destruction, and rebuild Iraq as a prosperous and stable society--for the good of the United States, the Iraqi people, and the entire region. Pollack believed for many years that the United States could prevent Saddam from threatening the stability of the Persian Gulf and the world through containment--a combination of sanctions and limited military operations. Here, Pollack explains why containment is no longer effective, and why other policies intended to deter Saddamultimately pose a greater risk than confronting him now, before he gains possession of nuclear weapons and returns to his stated goal of dominating the Gulf region. "It is often said that war should be employed only in the last resort," Pollack writes.
The Revolution in Military Affairs by Elinor C. Sloan, The war in Afghanistan, the Gulf war, and the NATO bombardment of Kosovo show clearly how advances in information technology are driving a high-tech revolution in military affairs (RMA) and transforming the nature of modern warfare. Elinor Sloan outlines the major elements of the RMA and examines the efforts of the United States, its NATO allies, and others to transform their military forces from the large, industrial-age forces of the Cold War to the smaller, more rapidly deployable yet highly lethal forces of the future. By detailing the diverse dimensions of the RMA, including its appropriateness in anti-terrorist campaigns and its relevance to peace support operations, The Revolution in Military Affairs looks at whether and to what extent the RMA is applicable to future military missions. Although the RMA has been the subject of much discussion in the United States for over a decade, it has not received the same level of analytic attention in Canada and other NATO and allied countries. Sloan examines the RMA in the context of Canada, Australia, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom in addition to assessing the transformation efforts of the United States Military. She concludes that small and medium military powers such as Canada must, at a minimum, take selected, concrete measures to maximize their military capabilities through the RMA if they are to avoid operational and political marginalisation in the promotion of international peace and security.
State Defense Forces - State Defense Forces (also known as State Guards, State Military Reserves, or State Militias) in the United States are military units that operate under the sole authority of a state government, although they are regulated by the National Guard Bureau of the United States Army (NGR 10-4). State Defense Forces are authorized by state and federal law and are under the command of the governor, as commander-in-chief, through the Adjutant General as the state's chief military officer. Awards and decorations of the State Defense Forces - Awards and decorations of the State Defense Forces are presented to members of the State Defense Forces in addition to regular United States military decorations and state National Guard military decorations. Each of the state governments of the United States maintains a series of decorations for issuance to members of the State Defense Forces, with such awards presented under the authority of the various State Adjutant Generals and/or respective State Defense Force commanders. United States law enforcement decorations - United States law enforcement decorations are various pseudo-military awards which are awarded by the police forces of the United States of America. Since the United States has a decentralized police force, with separate independent departments existing on the state and local level, there are literally thousands of law enforcement decorations in existence. SS Flickertail State (T-ACS-5) - SS Flickertail State (T-ACS-5) is a crane ship in ready reserve for the United States Navy. She is stationed at Newport News, Virginia and is in ready reserve under the Military Sealift Command.
